The Problem: Client urgently needed to hire someone to create digital signage for their 2-day national charity event.
The Goal: To create digital signage for use at NMAC’s 8th annual National Biomedical HIV Prevention Summit. Digital signage for use in all event spaces, promotion, atmosphere and speakers.
My Role: Researcher & Designer
Tools: Pencil and paper Figma Adobe Photoshop
Research
I was approached by NMAC to take over creation of event digital signage 6 weeks before the event.
Before meeting with them to hear more about the project, I did a deep dive into NMAC and it’s previous Biomedical Summits so I could ask productive and relevant questions during our meeting.
Overall NMAC goals:
To end the AIDS epidemic in communities most impacted by HIV.
Bring prevention awareness to the forefront and provide education and access to prevention tools in underserved communities.
Overall event goals:
Raise awareness of the importance of prevention tools such as PrEP, PEP, TasP, and U=U in ending the epidemic.
Encourage and inspire at-risk attendees to become more educated about prevention and act on it.
To raise money to support their “on the ground” efforts to get prevention methods to more communities.
Client Meeting
Following our meeting, I synthesized the interview notes and made the following plan for the initial design:
Use old war-time propaganda posters as inspiration for the event signage.
Adapt them to the current “war” on AIDS so attendees see themselves in them.
Ensure the design helps
attendees see themselves as part of the solution through spreading awareness and taking preventative measures (or helping others take those measures).
Rough Drafts and Revisions
I sent a round of rough drafts as early as possible to the client to make sure I was on the right track. They sent back a few comments, and I got back to work.
Final Products
I sent the revised posters to the client a week and a half before the deadline for more revisions.
The client was thrilled and didn’t ask for a second round of revisions!
Conference Displays and Outcome
I delivered the digital signage to the client a full week before requested.
I organized each poster according to size/aspect ratio and gave them 3 formats for each (as they had multiple screens in multiple event spaces).
Feedback from the client was very positive – they let me know the impact of the displays was exactly what they wanted. They commented that several attendees were taking pictures of the digital signage displays.
The client reported it was a very successful event and they met their goals!
